June 9th, 2009

191Billed as the “modern alternative” to sugary soda pops, these all-natural sodas are flavored with fruit, flower and herb extracts and lightly sweetened. They ring up at 45-70 calories per 12-ounce glass (yes, GLASS) bottle and 14-16 g sugar, vis-a-vis around 140-180 calories and between 39-41 g sugar for conventional sodas. Powerball money heading to South Dakota

May 28th, 2009

Hmmm … not sure I’m buying that, MathGuy. In order for the $2 ticket to be mathematically better, you must be assuming a better winning percentage than I’ve experienced. COURTYARD LOFTS REUSE WINS A NATIONAL AWARD

May 18th, 2009

The awards just keep coming: now it’s the turn of Courtyard Lofts, the colorful, daring, North Pine loft complex, recently honored by none other than the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for its fine design.

“Nobody’s gotten an AIA award out of Long Beach in years and years and years. The only bone of contention is that [fellow Long Beach architecture firm] Studio-111 started this project and it kind of died and then we picked it up,” says architect Jonathan Glasgow of Interstices, which has handled everything from the Kress Building revival a number of years ago to, well, the historically sensitive upstairs remodel of former Sachi kingpin Josh Lowenthal’s house.

That being said, there were no hard feelings; Glasgow made the April 29 trip to San Francisco to accept the award with Alan Pullman, a principal at Studio-111, which of course is currently spearheading both the Art Exchange project, and that condo complex at Anaheim Street and Long Beach Boulevard.
